Guest Post – Dating as a Single Mum by Natalie from Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Many years ago I faced dating as a single mum and that was before all the now popular dating websites existed, or if they did before they were as popular as they are now! I can’t imagine the world of dating now with online dating and having to juggle that and being a mum. Luckily I am happy with my boyfriend and don’t have that to face. I do have single friends who have looked into it though so was very interested at Natalie’s blog about being a single mum dating. I must admit I truly did laugh at some of her stories (links below!). This is a guest post from her about dating as a single mum.

Dating-now there’s a hot topic, everyone is talking about it and indeed doing it (or not as the case may be). If like me you’ve found yourself single in this very digital age, you too may be wondering where to start. Personally I became single again at the age of 34 years after a 17 year relationship including marriage. I suddenly found myself a single parent of two young children and with a whole different set of responsibilities and priorities. I began to wonder when and how I would meet anyone, after all single I may be, but young and free, not so much these days!

The saying goes that with age comes experience, whilst that may well be true the fact remains that dating seems to be a whole different ball game as you get older. Whilst you may have a clearer view of what you are looking for in terms of a relationship you may also have other things to take into consideration eg. children, family or work commitments. I know that a lot of people find that it’s not so easy to get out and meet people of the same age etc. You may also find that within your circle of friends many of them are married or in a relationship and you feel like your starting all over again.
That is where online dating can provide a great opportunity to meet new people. There are lots of different websites and apps that’s you can use. I generally use ones that have been recommended to me or I have seen well advertised and I am familiar with. Each site will offer different services and they all range from being free of charge to fully paid membership, it is worth researching these options before you sign up.

Safety is of course very important, never publicise any personal details on your profile eg- phone number or home address and when meeting up on a date always ensure that someone knows where you are and who you are with. My friends love a little update when I’m out, so they can keep up with the gossip! All sites will have a policy that details how to report/block anyone that you don’t feel comfortable about.

Online dating can be a great way of building up confidence and getting back in the swing of getting to know new people again. It allows you the chance to chat to others and can put you in touch with people who share the same interests as you. You may find you make some good friends along the way. I think it’s important to try and have fun, enjoy meeting new people and see where that takes you. Hopefully you’ll have a few giggles and good times, I’ve certainly got a few stories to tell!

Remember not every one will get along with each other, such is life. Try not to take it personally if things don’t go quite as you thought they would. You are after all meeting up with a stranger and bound to be nervous it’s only natural. If you can relax and enjoy yourself then hopefully the big wide world of dating can be an enjoyable experience, however old you are.
