It’s often said that moving home can be one of the most stressful situations you can find yourself in. It doesn’t have to be that way if you think about it carefully. If you’ve ever moved home before, then you will know there is a lot to get through when uprooting your whole life and moving to another area.

Whether it’s local or long-distance, either way, it isn’t the most fun job in the world. But with some preparation and some forethought, you can reduce the stress levels significantly.

Be organised

When you’re about to move house having everything organized into the correct boxes will make a huge difference. You’ll need to make sure you have plenty of space to move everything across of course.

Ultimately as long as you have everything boxed, and labelled effectively, it will make a massive difference in your life.

Moving is stressful enough without needing to search through things to find them. Just remember that if you are hiring or receiving help in any way, the labelling of the boxes is very clear.

The hiring company won’t know which room “Jimmy” is going to be sleeping in. So make sure you identify the places clearly. It could always be beneficial to get a man with a van to move some items you don’t want to go into a big lorry. Just search for your local one but do check all their insurances.

Delegate tasks

If there is more than one of you living in the household, organize everything into tasks. Then delegate those to people that you know will do the best job.

For example, your four-year-old might not be the best at putting away your plates, but they can sure sort through their toys, and work out what they are going to be wanting to keep or not. When everybody has a clear idea of what they’re doing, things get done a lot quicker

Pack in plenty of time

Do not leave it to the last minute to start packing, it always takes longer than you will imagine to pack up your whole life into boxes. You may not think you have a lot to move, but once it’s actually in boxes and in a van, it’s going to seem like a lot more than you first thought.

One great tip is to get a small box and put some scissors, tape, a pen, and a notepad in it, and carry it around the house as you pack. It will be a lot quicker this way rather than trying to find a pen or tape every five minutes.

Label everything

Labelling absolutely everything will just mean that all your items will find a new home on the other side more straightforwardly and quicker.

When things are done in a more organised fashion, everything is much less stressful. Don’t forget to write on the boxes what is in there. So that when you’re coming to unpack your cutlery you don’t find a box full of plates instead.

Don’t forget to be excited about your new home, even if the stress levels rise, it will all be worth it in the end!
