When the moment comes to buy a new pair of glasses, it may seem like a simple choice at first. It’s a case of single-vision vs. progressive lenses.
Single-vision lenses can be used to correct limitations in either near or far vision. If you have myopia, and, from the age of around 40 your ability to see close objects or print has started to deteriorate, you will need two separate pairs of glasses. Remember to always add a blue blocker coating onto your glasses to protect your eyes from blue light!
However, that’s not the end of the story. It’s unlikely that you spend all your time reading, using a computer, and driving a vehicle. We lead varied lives with a wide range of activities that benefit from optimum vision. No matter what your lifestyle, choose the glasses option which enables you to enjoy each moment to the max. Let’s take a look at just a few of the options.
Photochromic lenses change their degree of darkness according to the intensity of light, so they are clear (or almost), but darken to protect the eyes from damaging UV rays when you’re outside in the sunlight. If you really don’t want to be carrying more than one pair of glasses wherever you go, these are a great choice.

For example, when playing golf you need to be able to see clearly into the near- and mid-distance, with a clear vision in your peripheral field. If you’re running or cycling, this not only gives you more confidence, it will enhance your safety by ensuring you avoid obstacles. No matter what your sport, specially adapted progressive lenses will help you raise your game.
If you feel you that you don’t see well in the dark, but you have to drive a lot at night, it can be an uncomfortable and stressful activity. However, it doesn’t have to be, as there is a solution. Consider investing in a pair of yellow-tinted night-vision lenses. They’re designed to improve the contrast between dark objects, so you can see and differentiate between them more clearly. However, their main advantage is that they reduce the glare from oncoming vehicles and the reflection from wet road surfaces, making it easier for you to take effective action as required, and avoid accidents.
Blue light blockers
We are exposed to ‘High Energy Visible’, HEV, or ‘blue light’ as it is more commonly referred to, every day, from sunlight. However, these days it is found everywhere in our homes: computer screens, smartphones, laptops, flat-screen TVs among many other gadgets all emit significant amounts. Long-term effects are still being determined, but if you spend a lot of time close to these digital devices, and find that you are getting headaches and eye-strain, progressive or single-lens with a blue-light blocking coating may provide relief.
If you love swimming but don’t enjoy the blurred vision that you experience when in the pool or the ocean, there is a wide range of swimming goggles now available online. It’s easy to buy them with lenses that fit your prescription, so simply consult your ophthalmologist to ensure yours is up-to-date. There’s no need to stop there. Not only will you be safer, but you’ll also be able to appreciate fully all the life and beauty that surrounds you on each dive.
