January often signals the opportunity for many people to take stock of their health. Often, overeating and drinking too much over the festive period, combined with a lack of exercise and the general winter lack of motivation means that people start to feel bloated or unhealthy.

Making changes in the winter can be harder, without the energy and get up and go that the sun gives us in the summer months, we may feel reluctant to start. But for those who are braving a lifestyle change this new year, here are some simple tips to help you achieve your personal goals.

Decide What It Is That You Want To Achieve

One of the first things that you need to decide is what do you want to achieve? For some people it may be general weight loss, for others, it could be from a specific part of their body. Some people may be looking to lower cholesterol and blood pressure while reducing the chances of getting diabetes. Others may be looking for a more toned physique or to start competing in a sport.

There is no right or wrong here, and your personal goals should be based on what is important to you, however, identifying your goals will make it easier to choose the route to take. For example, if you are looking to tone your body, you will want to join a gym, potentially get a personal trainer and have a look at whey protein uk. Losing weight may mean joining a club such as slimming world, and trying to slowly increase your activity levels. The journey you take will be your own, and it is always best to seek out professional advice before making major changes to your health.

How Exercise Will Help You Lose Weight

Exercise is important to everyone. Whether you believe you need to lose weight by changing your diet or not, getting more active is crucial. Activity burns off calories, and in order to successfully lose weight, you need to be burning off more than you are taking in.

Consider your current activity levels before you set yourself a grueling exercise schedule. You need to be realistic about what you can achieve. If you think that you should be able to run 5 kilometers within a week or two of starting, then you will get disheartened when you realize that this is not attainable yet. Instead, build your activity up. Each day, make a small increase in the amount that you do.

Activities such as swimming have a low impact on your body. You will get to tone up muscle and loose skin as you start to lose weight, meaning you will feel better in your own body. But because there is no heavy impact on your legs like you may get in running, it can be a better way of exercising. Again, start off with a small amount that you feel comfortable with such as a slow lap or two and increase this each session.

Eventually, you will notice that your body produces endorphins as you exercise and you will start to feel better and happier after doing it. This will spur you on to continue exercising regularly. But you need to give yourself a chance to get to this stage.

Changing Your Diet To Improve Your Health

Making changes to your diet is important if you are to lose weight. There are two main areas that you may need to look at. Portion size is one, and the type of food that you are eating is another.

If your diet is full of fatty, sugary, and salty foods, then you will need to cut these out as they will be a major factor in your health concerns. Often, our bodies are so used to having these, that it can be very difficult going cold turkey. Cutting down considerably is one option, however, you will need to have the willpower to enjoy these foods in moderation.

Bring as much fresh fruit and veg into your diet as possible. If you do not usually enjoy this type of food, look for creative recipes that will allow you to enjoy them in a way that suits your tastes better. Avoiding too much coffee and tea is a good idea too.

Reducing your portion size is important, however, by moving to eat more vegetables, you will be able to eat more while consuming fewer calories and more nutrients. That way you’ll feel fuller for longer without having empty calories without any nutritional value.
