When you’re driving from the UK to Mallorca, Barcelona isn’t just a convenient stop, it’s a golden opportunity. That’s exactly how we found ourselves with just one day to explore one of Spain’s most vibrant cities. My partner Stuart, our 19-year-old son Ben, and I were in the middle of a road trip, and frankly, we weren’t keen on a day of endless walking. After spending a few days driving down to Barcelona for the overnight ferry to Mallorca, we had a lovely holiday in Santa Ponsa. Then, on the way home after a few hours driving and a long ferry back across to Barcelona, the last thing we wanted was to spend our precious Barcelona day trudging around.

My favourite was Gaudí’s famous basilica. Even from the outside, the Sagrada Família is breathtaking; pictures do not do it justice! The intricate facades tell biblical stories in stone, and the towering spires seem to pierce the sky. We didn’t book tickets to go inside (we will definitely go on our next visit), but even admiring it from street level was worth the stop.
We spent about an hour here, taking photos, having lunch and soaking up the atmosphere before hopping back on the bus.
Camp Nou: Ben’s Highlight
For Ben, visiting Camp Nou was non-negotiable. As a football fan, seeing the home of FC Barcelona was the main reason he was excited about our Barcelona stopover. The stadium tour didn’t disappoint. He got to see the pitch, visit the trophy room, and even sit in the players’ dugout.
Stuart and I aren’t huge football fans, but even we were impressed by the sheer size of the stadium and the passion of Barcelona’s football culture. The museum was well-designed, and the self-guided tour moved at a good pace. Ben would have happily spent the entire day here, but we convinced him there was more to see.
Gothic Quarter: A Step Back in Time
The bus took us near the Gothic Quarter, and we could see the narrow medieval streets. This area feels completely different from the rest of Barcelona, darker, more mysterious, with buildings that have stood for centuries.

The biggest advantage was how much ground we covered without exhausting ourselves. Barcelona’s attractions are spread out, and the distances between them would have meant a lot of walking or complicated metro journeys. The bus connected everything seamlessly. This was especially important since we had more driving ahead of us.

If you know you want to go inside specific attractions like the Sagrada Família or Camp Nou, book tickets online beforehand. We didn’t do anything like that this time, but I did notice that the Sagrada Família did not sell tickets and you had to buy them online!
Why We’ll Be Back (And What We’ll Do Differently)
Our one-day Barcelona adventure was so successful that we’re already thinking about a return trip. The city tour bus gave us the perfect overview, and now we know exactly what we want to explore in more depth.
