European Road Trip Essentials
Few adventures match the freedom and excitement of a road trip through Europe. Whether you’re gliding through the Tuscan countryside, navigating the winding roads of the Alps, or exploring the coastal highways of the French Riviera, the key to a successful road trip is thoughtful preparation. With that in mind, we’ve pulled together a comprehensive list of road trip essentials to keep your journey comfortable, safe, and stress-free.
Just wanted to give you a heads-up that this guide includes items I’ve been paid to feature, PR samples, and affiliate links that earn me a small commission. All opinions are my own, and I wouldn’t include anything I don’t think would be useful. Jen x

Comfort for the Journey
Long hours in the car can take a toll, so it’s worth packing a few items that keep things fresh and pleasant.
- Air Fresheners for the Car
Spending hours in a confined space means odours can quickly build up. Pop in a subtle air freshener to keep the atmosphere light and enjoyable. I love this Candy Kittens range of air fresheners available at Halfords! They wouldn’t be the same without a couple of bags of sweets, too, would they!

- Hand Creams and Hand Sanitiser
Road trips inevitably mean lots of stops, from petrol stations to roadside cafés. Hand sanitiser is essential for hygiene, while a good hand cream keeps your skin feeling soft after repeated washing.

- Beauty Products
A pared-down selection of beauty essentials can ensure you still feel your best after a long day on the road. Think travel-sized moisturiser, face mist, and lip balm – small touches that go a long way. I am trying a new skincare routine with Figgi Beauty products.

Safety First
Preparation is key, especially when it comes to your health and safety.
- First Aid Kit
A fully stocked first aid kit is non-negotiable. Go beyond the basics with thoughtful extras like blister plasters (a lifesaver after sightseeing walks), after sun lotion for unexpected sun exposure, and even a temporary filling kit. You never know when these small emergencies might arise.

- Travel Kit for the Country You’re Visiting
Many European countries have travel regulations for drivers. Be sure to pack essentials like a red warning triangle, high-visibility jackets, spare bulbs, and breathalysers where required. These not only keep you safe, they’re often legally mandated.
- Sea Sickness Bands
If your trip includes ferry crossings or winding mountain roads, sea sickness bands can be invaluable. They’re a simple, drug-free way to keep nausea at bay. I have bad sea sickness and find them really helpful, so I am hoping they save me on our ferry from Barcelona to Palma overnight!

Organisation and Packing
A good packing strategy keeps your trip running smoothly.
- A Selection of Bags
Different bags and packing cubes can make organisation easier. Separate items into smaller bags for shoes, toiletries, or dirty laundry, it’ll save you from rummaging through chaos in search of a clean pair of socks. This personalised bag was made from Vistaprint using our local football team’s logo. Why not consider buying some bespoke luggage?

- Cool Box
High on our recommendation list is the cool box from Halfords, complete with an adapter for use in hotels. Perfect for keeping snacks fresh, it’s versatile enough to stow drinks, yoghurt, or picnic essentials.
- Snacks (Including Mints)
A road trip isn’t complete without snacks. Stock up on nuts, dried fruit, or cereal bars for long stretches and keep mints on hand; they’re great for freshening up after meals or staying alert on long drives. I love these Peppersmith mints and gum!

Tech and Communication
Stay connected and entertained without running into hiccups.
- Roaming SIM Card or Mobile Plan Check
Ensure your mobile plan covers data roaming in Europe, or pick up a roaming SIM card. For families or frequent travellers, you may find this Mobile WiFi Hotspot I reviewed from Netgear is better for you. Reliable connectivity is key for navigating new destinations, checking restaurant reviews, or even translating if needed.
- Portable Chargers
Bring a power bank or two because, between using your phone for maps and taking endless scenic photos, you’ll burn through battery in no time.

Essentials for Relaxation and Fun
Not every moment of a road trip is spent exploring – quiet evenings at the hotel deserve planning too.
- Games and Playing Cards
After a long day of adventure, you might not feel like going out. Card games or travel-sized board games are perfect for low-key entertainment during those evenings.
- Books or Audiobooks
Pack a good novel, your Kindle or download audiobooks to enjoy during quiet moments. They’re a brilliant way to unwind or make the travel time fly by.

Weather-Ready Must-Haves
You’ll need to prepare for Europe’s variable weather.
- Suitable Hats, Sunglasses, and Suncream
Whether you’re visiting sunny coastlines or driving above the clouds in the mountains, sun protection is critical. Pack a comfortable hat, a strong SPF suncream, and a good pair of sunglasses. Your skin will thank you.

- Light Layers and Waterproofs
The weather can change at a moment’s notice. A lightweight waterproof jacket or travel umbrella slots easily into your day bag without taking up too much space.
