So, what is the right age at which one can introduce a play mat? What are some of the factors that you need to consider when buying a play mat for your kids?

When to introduce a play mat

Newborns are very delicate and one must be careful when introducing play mats for them. However, you may be surprised to learn that some babies can use these mats even when they are one month old.

Such a baby may even lie on the mat unaided, giving them the freedom to make any motor movements. Therefore, A play mat is essential for babies and toddlers as it helps them have lots of fun and improve their motor skills.

One advantage of exposing your baby to a play mat is that they become familiar with it early enough. The baby will be safe in such an environment, and they will develop and learn new skills for their wellbeing. Tummy time could be a great activity for the baby to engage in while using the play mat.

What is tummy time?

This is yet another time when the baby can use the playmat. Tummy time refers to the time when the baby spends time lying on their tummy when they are awake.

It is a good time to let the baby exercise and develop their sensory development and their visual and motor skills. During tummy time, your baby has a chance to develop their body muscles. As a result, they can learn to crawl, sit up and walk.

Tips to help you choose the right playmat

You will find many types of playmats for your baby. These come in different sizes and thicknesses. There are many factors that you need to consider when choosing these mats. These are:

Material

The material the mat is made from is a great consideration. Ensure that it is safe for your baby and the environment. Playmats made from TPU foam are non-toxic. They are biodegradable and waterproof. These are good features for the mat suitable for your baby.

Consider design and thickness

A playmat with 12 to 15 mm of thickness is ideal. This would make better comfort for the baby as they play.  If it is thinner than this, then the baby is susceptible to dangerous falls. It would also not be comfortable enough for the baby to crawl on. If it is thicker than the above, the baby would sink in, making them unable to move on the mat.

You may also need to consider the cost of the mat. The best thing is to window-shop around before you choose the best playmat. Look at the safety information and consider the health of your family as more important than the design or cost.
