Win a £20 Amazon Gift Card – Because You Deserve a Treat Too!
I have another lovely giveaway for you today, and this time I have a little request for whoever wins. I’m giving one lucky Just Average Jen reader the chance to win a £20 Amazon gift card, but rather than using it to buy something for the children, your partner, your parents or anyone else, I’d really love you to spend it on yourself!
Now, obviously, I can’t come round to your house and check what you’ve ordered, and I’m certainly not going to demand photographic evidence that you’ve bought yourself something nice! If you win and decide to spend it on Christmas presents for someone else, that’s entirely your choice. However, I would love it if you used this as an excuse to buy yourself something you’ve been wanting for a while, even if it’s something small.
I think so many of us are guilty of putting everyone else first, particularly at this time of year. We’re thinking about Christmas presents, what everyone needs, who’s difficult to buy for and whether we’ve forgotten somebody. Meanwhile, the things we’d quite like for ourselves tend to get pushed further and further down the list.
So this giveaway is my little reminder that you’re allowed to treat yourself occasionally, too!

Why do we find it so difficult to spend money on ourselves?
I don’t know about you, but I think it’s surprisingly easy to justify spending money on other people while talking yourself out of buying something you actually want.
You might happily spend £20 on a birthday present for someone, or pick up a few extra things for the family while you’re shopping, but when you spot a book, a new top or something for your hobby that costs the same amount, suddenly you’re wondering whether you really need it.
And of course, you probably don’t need it. That’s rather the point of a treat, isn’t it?
I think when you’re busy looking after a family, working, running a home or juggling all the other things life throws at you, it can become a habit to think about everyone else’s needs before your own. Sometimes it’s because money is tight, sometimes it’s because there are always more important things to pay for, and sometimes it’s simply because you’ve got so used to putting yourself last that you barely notice you’re doing it.
I’m not suggesting we should all start spending money we haven’t got or ignoring the bills in favour of shopping. I’ve certainly had times when there were much more important things to spend £20 on! But I do think there’s something nice about having a little bit of money that’s just for you, without feeling that you need to justify it to anybody.
That’s partly why I wanted to run this giveaway. Rather than choosing a particular prize that might not suit everyone, an Amazon gift card means the winner can pick something they’ll genuinely enjoy.
What would you buy yourself with £20?
I think this is the fun part, because everyone’s idea of a treat is different.
For me, books are always a temptation. I love reading, particularly crime novels and psychological thrillers, and there’s something lovely about having a new book waiting for you when you finally get a bit of time to sit down. Admittedly, my list of books I want to read is already rather longer than the time I have available, but that doesn’t seem to stop me adding more!
If you’re a reader too, you might enjoy having a look at some book reviews and reading recommendations. I always think a good book is one of those relatively inexpensive treats that can give you hours of enjoyment, particularly when the weather is miserable and staying indoors sounds much more appealing than going out.
Of course, you might prefer something completely different. Perhaps there’s a little home accessory you’ve had your eye on, some new stationery, a puzzle, something crafty or a beauty product you wouldn’t normally buy. You might even decide to put the voucher towards something more expensive that you’ve been saving for.
I think the important thing is that you choose something because you want it, rather than because it’s useful for everybody else.
And if your idea of a treat is buying something practical, that’s fine too. I’m certainly not going to judge anyone who gets genuinely excited about a new kitchen gadget or a particularly nice notebook!
You don’t have to earn a treat
One thing I’ve become much more aware of over the years is how often we tell ourselves that we can have something nice once we’ve achieved something else.
Perhaps you’ll buy yourself new clothes when you’ve lost weight, have a relaxing afternoon once the house is completely tidy or spend money on a hobby when you’ve finished everything on your to-do list.
The trouble is that there’s nearly always something else that needs doing.
When I was losing weight, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I’d be able to wear or how I’d feel when I reached a particular size. Looking back, I wish I’d spent a little less time waiting for some future version of myself and a little more time appreciating the person I already was.
That’s something I’ve tried to talk about more on Just Average Jen, particularly when it comes to building confidence and feeling happier with yourself.
I’m not saying a £20 gift card is going to transform your confidence or make all your worries disappear. Wouldn’t that be lovely if it did? But I do think it’s worth reminding ourselves that we don’t have to achieve something extraordinary before we’re allowed a little enjoyment.
You don’t have to lose weight, get a promotion, finish decorating the house or tick everything off your list before buying yourself something nice.
Sometimes wanting something and being able to afford it is reason enough.
Treating yourself doesn’t have to cost a fortune
Although this giveaway is for a £20 Amazon gift card, I don’t think treating yourself always needs to involve spending money.
Sometimes it’s as simple as sitting down with a cup of tea and a book without feeling guilty about everything else you could be doing. It might be going for a walk somewhere lovely, spending an afternoon taking photographs or catching up with a friend.
I’ve found over the years that making a little time for things I enjoy can make a difference to how I feel, particularly when life is busy and there always seems to be something that needs sorting out.
If you’re someone who struggles to put yourself first, the NHS Every Mind Matters website has practical advice about looking after your mental wellbeing, managing stress and finding ways to feel better.
You don’t need to turn self-care into another enormous project, either. I sometimes think we make these things more complicated than they need to be. Not everyone wants to meditate, run five miles before breakfast or spend an evening having a bubble bath surrounded by candles.
If what makes you happy is reading a book, doing a jigsaw, watching a ridiculous comedy or spending an hour doing absolutely nothing, that’s fine by me!
And if you’re looking for a few encouraging words, I’ve also shared some self-esteem quotes to help boost your confidence.

As I said earlier, I’m not going to tell you what you can and can’t spend it on. If you decide to use it for someone else, that’s your decision, but my challenge to you is to put yourself first this once!

A little reminder before you go
I hope whoever wins this giveaway chooses something that makes them smile, even if it’s only something small.
With Christmas approaching, it’s very easy to get caught up in making sure everyone else has the perfect present while forgetting about yourself. And while I love finding lovely gifts for other people, I think it’s important to remember that we’re allowed to enjoy things too.
You don’t need to wait until someone buys you something for Christmas, and you don’t need to feel guilty because you’ve spent a little money on yourself rather than the family.
So if you win, please at least consider keeping this £20 for yourself. I promise I won’t tell anyone if you order that book, those cosy socks or whatever else you’ve had your eye on!
Good luck, and thank you for entering. I hope this giveaway gives someone a lovely little treat to look forward to.

If I won, I would buy myself a big box of posh chocolates.
