Why I Want to Try and Make Additional Storage for My Kitchen

We’ve all been there hunting for the blender at the back of the cupboard because you last used it when you made soup but now it is nowhere to be seen. I have a spacious kitchen and so many gadgets, but somehow, there never seems to be enough storage. It’s like a game of gadget hide-and-seek.

If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for ingenious ways to maximise your kitchen space without having to resort to drastic measures like a full-blown remodel or investing in a supersized American-style fridge freezer. Here I want to share the things I am planning on doing in my kitchen, it may inspire you or you may laugh knowing how poor my DIY skills actually are!

This is a collaborative post.

My Dilemma

My kitchen ticks all the boxes—it’s big and spacious, perfect for all the cooking I need and space for our large dining table too. But, with my expanding collection of gadgets, it seems like my drawers and cupboards are constantly at capacity. Even with all this space, I find myself struggling to keep everything organised and accessible.

Sound familiar? If so, don’t worry, you’re not alone. If, like me you have searched Pinterest for ideas and just want an easy solution, maybe these ideas I have will help you too.

Slide-Out Storage Next to the Fridge

One of the wasted spaces in my kitchen is next to the fridge. With a bit of DIY, this space could be transformed with a custom-built slide-out storage unit. Perfect for storing squash bottles, various vinegars and oils, sauces, and more. That is the dream anyway!

How I want to do it: I have no idea yet and this is why I haven’t started it yet! Any ideas let me know!

Add Shelf Risers Inside Cupboards

Shelf risers are a brilliant and affordable way to double your space. I have a few of these already but I would like to add more and possibly add some stronger ones made with plywood sheets.

Pull-Out pantry shelves for my corner cupboard

Our corner cupboard is quite deep and hard to access, installing pull-out shelves could make a world of difference. These shelves would slide out like drawers, allowing me to see and reach everything easily. I have no idea at all how to make these so I am hoping someone invents something perfect I can buy!

Over-the-Door Storage

Over-the-door storage racks would be an excellent way to utilise wasted space but I am unsure if they are easily available that don’t look awful from the outside. An alternative I have considered is carefully places sticky hooks inside the cupboard doors to use for things like pan lids etc.

Under-Shelf Baskets

I like the idea of adding under-shelf baskets. These baskets hook onto the existing shelf and provide additional storage space underneath. Ideal for storing lightweight items like tea towels, paper plates, or sandwich bags. The only issue we have is I am not sure if I would have to remove the plinth type edging under the cupboards to fit them.

Summary

In summary, I have lots of ideas yet no idea how to pull some of them off! Maybe this is where I need to find someone who is good at kitchen renovations and upgrades without having to have a whole new kitchen put in. Now there is an idea for a business someone could start as there must be so many people who are like me and have no idea at all!
