How to Choose the Best Style Bed for Your Children’s Bedroom

This is a collaborative post.

Decorating a bedroom for a child can be an enjoyable and exciting process. As a parent, you want your child’s bedroom to be comfortable, safe, and look good too. Choosing the best style bed is one of the most crucial decisions you’ll make when decorating.

With so many options, deciding which style will work best for your child can be challenging. I have chosen so many different beds for Ben over the years I thought I would share the advantages and disadvantages of each with you.

The best style bed for the child’s age

The first thing to consider when choosing the best style bed for your child’s bedroom is their age. If your child is a toddler or preschooler, you may prefer a low-profile bed or a toddler bed closer to the ground.

Children in this age range are likely to fall out of bed, and a bed closer to the floor will reduce the risk of injury. When Ben moved from a toddler bed to a single bed I kept the smaller toddler bed mattress and popped it on the floor next to his single bed in case he rolled out, he didn’t, but it was reassuring knowing it was there.

For older children, beds with higher profiles are an excellent option. Loft beds or bunk beds are also great for maximizing space, making them perfect for shared bedrooms. Ben had bunk beds when he was younger and had an entire bunk just for his teddies!

It is also sensible to think about how long you expect this bed to last, some are great for younger children, but older teenagers who suddenly have a grown spurt will find climbing up to them difficult. Kids’ beds should last a few years in an ideal world to get your money’s worth!

The best style bed for your child’s personality

Your child’s personality can also play a role in the style of bed you choose. Some children prefer a cosy, snug bed, while others want a more open and airy feel.

If you have a child who loves reading and snuggling, a canopy daybed might be a great option. A loft bed might work better for a child who wants to have a little privacy. You can also opt for a bed with a unique design or vibrant colour if your child has a creative streak.

Have you seen the beds set up for gamers? There are some amazing-looking ones on Better Bed Company I saw recently. Ben would have loved these when he was younger; now he has a double bed with his tv and game consoles on a huge chest of drawers in perfect view from his bed and his recliner chain – spoilt kid!

Storage beds

Storage is often a concern in children’s bedrooms, so why not make your child’s bed a storage solution, too? Look for beds with built-in storage drawers underneath or with headboards with shelves or cabinets. You can also find loft beds with desk attachments, perfect for doing homework, art projects, or as described above the gaming beds.

In my experience, cabin beds with a solid wooden base for the mattress are great for younger kids but not comfortable as they get older and heavier, so it is worth bearing this in mind.

Ottoman beds are great and in my opinion, the best style bed for older children with lots of stuff or a small room with minimal storage. Do bear in mind the risk of the child overloading it with things and breaking the base, or hiding in it and getting stuck!

Consider the future

As children grow, their needs and preferences will change. When choosing a bed, keep the future in mind. A convertible cot that transforms into a toddler-sized bed can save you money and grow with your child. A bunk bed that can be separated into two twin beds is also a great investment that lasts years.

If you have more than one child it is also worth considering neutral colours so beds can be passed down to siblings if needed too.

Ensure the bed is safe

Safety is always a top priority for your child’s bedroom. Make sure to choose a bed that meets all safety standards and is well-built. Avoid buying a bed with a sharp or rough edge, and ensure that the bed frame is free of any splinters or cracks.

Remember too to consider where the plug sockets are in relation to their sleeping area, will they have a plug next to where they lay that will encourage little ones to poke their fingers in when they can’t sleep or older kids to charge their phone and have the risks of a cable across their bed!

Final thoughts

Choosing the best style bed for your child’s bedroom requires some careful consideration. Think about your child’s age, personality, storage needs, and future growth when making your decision.

With these tips, you can select a comfortable, safe bed that meets your child’s unique needs. Remember, investing in a quality bed is worth it for your child’s well-being in the long run! It will also save you money in replacing beds more frequently than is usually necessary.
