Duke of Edinburgh essentials from Helly Hansen
Do you have a youngster who is following the Duke of Edinburgh programme and needs a kit for an expedition?
Ben is excited about his but needed a long list of items for the planned expeditions from waterproof trousers to walking shoes and socks. We have worked with Helly Hansen to share with you our favourite picks.
This article includes items I was sent free of charge as PR samples in return for sharing them with you. All opinions are my own.

Men’s Dubliner Waterproof Pants
Waterproof trousers are essential on the kit list for a Duke of Edinburgh expedition and perfect for any other hiking too. Not only do you need waterproof trousers but windproof is ideal too, the difference it will make is immense.
These Men’s Dubliner waterproof trousers from Helly Hansen are breathable, so they won’t get sweaty and uncomfortable in them but will stay dry and warm as they are lined to make them more comfortable.
I would suggest buying a similar size to normal trousers unless you plan to wear thick trousers under them to layer up.
At £75, these will be a great choice, and they are designed to last, so should be a good investment, especially if your youngster will do other Duke of Edinburgh awards. They are available in sizes small to 5xl.
LIFA Active Crew Base Layer
Base layers are really important when hiking as they help keep you warm while also managing the moisture you produce from sweating.
This LIFA Active Crew Base Layer is very lightweight at around 270g and has an advanced two-layer construction for all-day comfort.
This base layer is £45 and is available in sizes from small to 2xl.

Men’s Move Rain Jacket
This Helly Hansen jacket is a very versatile waterproof jacket perfect for hiking and city wear, so whilst it is £170, it won’t just be used for the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.
The Men’s Move Rain jacket is fully waterproof and windproof whilst also being breathable. It is recommended to tumble dry it after washing to reactivate the water-repellent treatment that is applied.
The fit is flexible as there are adjustable cuffs, and the bottom hem can also be adjusted for the perfect fit. The hood is drawstring, so it can be made to fit perfectly to keep them dry and warm.
This jacket is available in three different colours and sizes, small to 2xl.
Men’s Cascade Low-cut Helly Tech Hiking Shoes
These hiking shoes are perfect for the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. They are stylish and a popular brand with youngsters, but also they have the perfect structure to protect their feet.
The Men’s Cascade low-cut Helly Tech hiking shoes are lightweight and fully waterproof, perfect for keeping your feet warm and dry! With in-built heel and toe caps, they prevent injury and also have cushioning for comfort, so perfect for long hikes.
The sole of these shoes has the perfect grip for all terrains and prevents your youngster from slipping in the mud.
These shoes are a great alternative to hiking boots while providing good support and comfort.
Available from size 6.5 to 12.5 at £120, they are a great option to consider.

What do we think of the Helly Hansen hiking gear?
The clothing we have tried out is all perfect for a Duke of Edinburgh expedition as well as other outdoor activities, so we are sure it will get well used.
The fits are all as expected, and the quality all feels good and like it will last well; that said, they are still new. We can’t comment on this now and will update you in a year or so with how well they are lasting.
Ben loves the look of the clothes as the branding is stylish and practical, so we would recommend them.
