Santa Ponsa Guide – Everything You Need To Know Before You Visit
There are some places you visit once, enjoy for a week and then move on to somewhere new the following year. We all have those holidays where we’ve had a lovely time, but we don’t necessarily feel the need to go back. Santa Ponsa isn’t one of those places for us. Madrid on the other hand, I loved it, but would I go back, no!
Over the years, we’ve stayed here several times as a family. The first visits were when our son was younger, and more recently, we’ve returned with him as an adult. Although every holiday has been different, there’s something about Santa Ponsa that keeps drawing us back. It isn’t the biggest resort in Mallorca, and it certainly isn’t the quietest, but for us it strikes that happy balance where everything just feels easy. I think that’s probably the best word to describe Santa Ponsa – easy.
You don’t spend your holiday constantly checking maps or wondering where to eat. You don’t feel like you have to rush from one attraction to the next to make the most of your time. Instead, days seem to unfold naturally. You might spend the morning by the sea, stop somewhere for lunch overlooking the beach, wander along the promenade in the evening and somehow end up finding another restaurant you want to try tomorrow.
Some of my favourite holiday memories aren’t from expensive excursions or famous attractions. They’re simply walking along the seafront with an ice cream after dinner, sitting watching the boats while chatting about absolutely nothing important, or taking a longer walk than we’d planned because the weather was perfect and nobody wanted to head back yet.
That’s probably why I wanted to write this guide.
When I was planning our first trip, I found plenty of articles telling me where Santa Ponsa was and listing the attractions, but very few explained what it actually felt like to stay there. Would we need a car? Would there be enough to do? Was it somewhere we’d enjoy as a family? Would we be bored after a few days?
Now that we’ve been back several times, I feel like I can answer those questions honestly. This isn’t a guide written after a quick weekend visit or based on someone else’s itinerary. It’s everything I’ve learnt from returning to Santa Ponsa time and time again, including the little things that only really become obvious once you’ve experienced the resort for yourself.
Whether you’re planning your first visit or wondering if Santa Ponsa is the right part of Mallorca for your next holiday, I hope sharing our experiences helps you decide.
What Is Santa Ponsa Really Like?
If someone asked me to describe Santa Ponsa in one sentence, I’d probably say it’s the sort of place where you can have exactly the holiday you want. That might sound like a strange thing to say, but it’s true.
Some people spend the whole week on the beach. Others head off exploring Mallorca every day before returning in the evening for dinner. We’ve done a bit of both depending on the holiday, and Santa Ponsa works well for either.
The first thing you’ll probably notice is the beach. It’s wide, sandy and backed by a lovely promenade that quickly becomes the heart of the resort. Throughout the day you’ll see people swimming, paddleboarding, reading books under parasols or simply sitting with a coffee watching the world go by.
As the evening arrives, everything changes again. Families stroll along the promenade, restaurants start filling up, and live music drifts out from bars. It has a lovely atmosphere without ever feeling too hectic. There are stalls along the promenade for various little souveniers, hair braiding, henna tattoos etc.
One thing I’ve always appreciated is that Santa Ponsa doesn’t seem to be trying to be something it isn’t.
It isn’t pretending to be an exclusive luxury destination, but it also isn’t a full-on party resort. It simply feels welcoming. You’ll see couples enjoying a quiet meal together, families with children building sandcastles on the beach, groups of friends enjoying cocktails and older visitors making the most of the sunshine. Everyone seems to find their own pace.
We’ve visited at different stages of our lives, and that’s something I’ve really noticed. When our son was younger, we naturally looked for different things. We wanted an easy beach, plenty of choice for meals and somewhere safe to wander in the evenings. More recently, with him now an adult, we’ve spent more time exploring on foot, discovering new bars and enjoying different areas.
The resort has worked just as well for both. I also think Santa Ponsa is one of those places where you quickly find yourself settling into a routine without even meaning to.
It’s comfortable without being boring, lively without being overwhelming and relaxed without feeling sleepy. For us, that’s a difficult balance to find, and it’s one of the biggest reasons we keep returning.
Who Is Santa Ponsa Perfect For? (And Who Might Prefer Somewhere Else?)
One of the questions I see asked most often is whether Santa Ponsa is the right resort to book. The honest answer is that it depends on the sort of holiday you enjoy.
For us, it’s been ideal because we like having choices without feeling pressured to fill every minute of the day. We enjoy walking, eating out, exploring nearby places, and ending the evening with a gentle stroll rather than going to a nightclub.
If that sounds like your kind of holiday too, I think you’ll probably love Santa Ponsa.
It’s particularly good if you’re travelling as a couple. There are plenty of restaurants for relaxed evenings, beautiful sunsets along the promenade and enough places to walk that you never feel confined to your hotel.
I’d also happily recommend it for families.
Having visited with our son over several years, we’ve always found it to be an easy place to holiday. The beach slopes gently into the sea, there are plenty of places to stop for drinks or ice creams, and you don’t have to walk far before finding somewhere suitable to eat, even if you’ve got fussy eaters in the family.
As our son got older, we naturally spent less time on the beach and more time exploring, but Santa Ponsa is perfect for that too. Some days we’d wander to the marina, another day we’d head off on a coastal walk, while other days we’d simply catch a bus to another part of Mallorca for a change of scenery.
It’s also a great choice if you don’t want to hire a car. I’ll talk more about transport later in this guide, but we’ve found that staying here without driving is perfectly manageable. There are supermarkets nearby, plenty of restaurants within walking distance and good transport links if you want to explore further.
That said, Santa Ponsa won’t suit everyone.
If you’re looking for huge nightclubs and parties until the early hours, you’ll probably find nearby Magaluf a better fit. Equally, if your dream holiday is staying in a tiny traditional Mallorcan village where life moves at a much slower pace, Santa Ponsa may feel a little busier than you’re hoping for.
Personally, I think Santa Ponsa is somewhere in the middle.
It has enough life to keep things interesting, but I’ve never found it exhausting. You can spend the day doing very little or fill your holiday with walks, sightseeing and day trips. That’s one of the things I love most about it. You never feel like there’s a right or wrong way to enjoy your holiday.
Every time we’ve visited, we’ve come home feeling properly rested, and that’s not something I can honestly say about every destination we’ve travelled to.
If you’re looking for somewhere friendly, easy to explore and relaxed enough that you can genuinely switch off for a week, I can completely understand why so many people, ourselves included, keep coming back to Santa Ponsa.
Getting Around & Staying in Santa Ponsa Without a Car
Having now visited both with and without a car, I’d happily say that you can have a brilliant holiday in Santa Ponsa without ever getting behind the wheel. When we have driven to Mallorca and stayed in Santa Ponsa, we have usually left our car alone while we are there and not needed it again until we leave.
The resort itself is very walkable. Most hotels are within easy walking distance of the beach, restaurants, shops and supermarkets, so once you’ve arrived, there’s rarely any need to drive just to go out for dinner or pick up a few essentials.
We’ve found ourselves walking far more than we’d planned simply because it’s enjoyable. Instead of jumping in the car to get from one place to another, we’d often decide to wander along the promenade or take a slightly different route back after dinner. It never really felt like walking for the sake of it—it just became part of the holiday.
If you want to explore further afield, Mallorca’s bus network is surprisingly easy to use. We’ve caught buses to nearby resorts without any problems, and taxis are easy to find too. Unless you’re planning lots of trips into the mountains or to more remote villages, I don’t think hiring a car is essential.
That said, if you do enjoy driving, having a car does give you the freedom to discover more of Mallorca at your own pace. I love driving in Mallorca, and it is surprisingly easy!
One thing I would say is that Santa Ponsa has enough restaurants, shops and things to do that you certainly won’t feel trapped if you decide not to hire a car. For many people, I actually think that’s one of its biggest advantages.
The Beach and Promenade
I honestly don’t know how many times we’ve walked up and down the promenade over the years, but it’s a lot. Sometimes we’d head out after breakfast with a coffee in hand; other days we’d stroll along before dinner; and other days we’d end up back there as the sun started to go down.
There’s something really relaxing about it.
People are never in much of a rush. Families wander along with children still covered in sand, couples stop to watch the sunset, and you’ll often hear live music drifting from nearby bars and restaurants.
The main beach is another reason we’ve enjoyed returning to Santa Ponsa. It’s a wide sandy beach with calm, shallow water that’s ideal for swimming or simply cooling off on a hot day.
I’m not someone who can spend ten hours lying on a sunbed, but I still love spending time there. Sometimes we’d just sit watching the boats bobbing around in the bay or take a paddle in the sea before heading off to explore somewhere else.
If you enjoy people watching, it’s a lovely place to spend an hour or two. There always seems to be something going on, whether that’s paddleboarders heading out into the bay, children building elaborate sandcastles or families enjoying picnics under parasols.
There are also plenty of benches and walls if, like me, you occasionally just want to sit for a while and take it all in.
My Favourite Walks Around Santa Ponsa
If you’ve read much of my blog, you’ll know I love wandering when I’m on holiday.
Not huge hikes that leave me exhausted, but the kind of walks where you discover somewhere new, stop for a drink halfway and enjoy the scenery without feeling like you’re exercising.
Santa Ponsa is perfect for that.
Exploring the Marina
I love wandering around here in the early evening when the light starts changing and the boats reflect on the water. If you’re interested in photography like I am, it’s one of those places where you’ll probably end up taking far more pictures than you intended.
It’s peaceful, never seems overcrowded and feels completely different from the lively atmosphere around the main beach.
Can You Walk to Magaluf?
Technically, yes. It’s a long walk though, but it’s perfectly possible if you enjoy covering a few miles. We have gone by bus over to Palmanova and Magaluf from Santa Ponsa and it is a beautiful route.
While Magaluf certainly has its attractions, every time we’ve got back into Santa Ponsa it has felt noticeably calmer. It always reminds me why we’ve chosen to stay here instead. I love Palmanova and Magaluf, but in the busy season, they can be a bit busy with youngsters and stag or hen parties; Santa Ponsa rarely has that!
Restaurants, Bars and Supermarkets
One thing we’ve never had to worry about in Santa Ponsa is finding somewhere to eat. In fact, choosing can sometimes be the hardest part. We often stay all-inclusive so only have some meals out of the hotel but the choice is amazing.
Whether you fancy traditional tapas, Italian, Indian, steak, seafood or simply pizza after a day on the beach, there is something for everyone.
I also like that eating out in Santa Ponsa doesn’t have to become expensive if you don’t want it to. There are cafés for a quick lunch, bakeries for snacks and plenty of places where you can simply stop for coffee and cake while watching the world go by.
Supermarkets
Even when we’ve stayed all-inclusive, we’ve still ended up visiting the supermarkets. There’s always something you need—extra drinks for the room, snacks for a walk, fresh fruit or perhaps a bottle of water before heading to the beach.
You’ll find several supermarkets around the resort, ranging from smaller convenience stores to larger supermarkets with a wider choice of groceries. The large Eroski is a good size and includes a good gluten-free section if you need that too.
We never struggled to find anything we needed, and prices are often more reasonable than buying everything from hotel shops. If you have the time and energy, a walk to the big Eroski saves money compared to the smaller Spar-type supermarkets nearer the beach.
If you’re staying in self-catering accommodation, you’ll have no problem picking up breakfast supplies, picnic food or ingredients for simple meals.
What Is the Nightlife Like in Santa Ponsa?
Whenever people mention Mallorca, it’s easy to think of lively nightlife and packed clubs. Santa Ponsa is quite different.
Yes, there are plenty of bars, live music venues and places to enjoy a drink, but the atmosphere has always felt much more relaxed to me. That’s one of the reasons we’ve kept coming back.
In the evenings, sometimes we’d head out after dinner, wander along the promenade and then stop somewhere if we heard music we liked.
It never felt like there was pressure to stay out until the early hours.
If you’re looking for huge nightclubs and all-night parties, nearby Magaluf is probably a better choice. But if, like us, you enjoy evenings that feel sociable without being overwhelming, Santa Ponsa gets the balance just right.
I think that’s true of the resort as a whole. It has enough going on that you never feel bored, but it still manages to feel peaceful. For me, that’s what a great holiday should feel like.
Day Trips from Santa Ponsa
Santa Ponsa is such a good base for exploring the rest of Mallorca. While we often stay in the resort, there are so many places you could visit for the day.
Visit Palma
If you’ve never been to Palma, it’s well worth setting aside a day.
The capital has a completely different feel to the resorts, with beautiful old streets, independent shops, cafés tucked into little squares and the impressive cathedral overlooking the waterfront.
It’s easy to reach by bus, taxi or car, making it one of the simplest day trips from Santa Ponsa.
Explore Peguera
Peguera has a different atmosphere to Santa Ponsa but is close enough for an easy day out. It’s another resort with lovely beaches and a pleasant promenade, and if you enjoy walking, you may even decide to combine the journey with one of the coastal routes between the two.
Walk Around Port Adriano
Port Adriano deserves a visit too. The marina is beautifully designed and has a completely different atmosphere to Santa Ponsa. It’s the sort of place where you’ll find luxury yachts, stylish cafés and people sitting with a coffee simply watching the boats come and go.
Whether you’re interested in sailing or not, it’s a lovely place to spend a relaxed afternoon.
Discover More of Mallorca
If you do hire a car, Santa Ponsa is also a great starting point for exploring further afield. A Drive to the north-east area of the island for Alcúdia takes around an hour. Other great places to visit are the beautiful west coast and some of Mallorca’s mountain villages. One thing I love about the island is how quickly the scenery changes.
That’s another reason I enjoy staying in Santa Ponsa. It gives you the best of both worlds. You have everything you need close by, but there’s still so much more waiting to be discovered if you fancy venturing further or that you can see is you drive in to the resort.

Practical Tips for Visiting Santa Ponsa
After visiting several times, there are a few little things I’ve learnt that I’d happily tell anyone planning their first holiday.
Don’t feel you have to hire a car
If your main plan is to relax, enjoy the beach and explore nearby areas, you’ll probably manage perfectly well without one. We certainly have.
Bring comfortable shoes
This might sound obvious, but if you’re anything like me you’ll end up walking far more than you expected.
Whether it’s wandering along the promenade every evening or heading to Port Adriano, comfortable footwear makes a big difference.
Don’t just eat on the seafront
Some lovely restaurants sit just a street or two back from the promenade.
It’s worth exploring a little because we’ve found some of our favourite meals that way.
Leave time for doing nothing
It’s easy to fill your holiday with excursions, markets and sightseeing, but some of my favourite memories are simply sitting by the beach with an ice cream or watching the sunset after dinner.
Santa Ponsa is one of those places where slowing down is part of the experience.
Explore beyond the beach
The beach is lovely, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that’s all Santa Ponsa has to offer.
Some of our happiest days have involved barely setting foot on the sand because we were off walking, discovering the marina or exploring another area.
It isn’t just a family resort
Although you’ll see plenty of families, we’ve also really enjoyed visiting now our son is an adult.
It works just as well for couples, friends or anyone wanting a relaxed base for exploring Mallorca.

Is Santa Ponsa worth visiting?

Are there supermarkets in Santa Ponsa?
Yes, there are several supermarkets and convenience stores throughout the resort. Whether you’re self-catering or simply want drinks and snacks for your room, you’ll have plenty of choice. The large Eroski is by far the best, and most like a standard UK supermarket; the others are more like local convenience stores.
Is Santa Ponsa expensive?
Like most holiday resorts, you can spend as much or as little as you choose. We’ve found everything from inexpensive cafés and bakeries to more upmarket restaurants, so it’s fairly easy to find options that suit your budget.
Hotels in Santa Ponsa
We have stayed at a few hotels in Santa Ponsa. Here are my thoughts on those we have stayed in.
Hotel Bahia del Sol – A lovely hotel, but the pool was quite small, the food was not ideal for fussy eaters or vegetarians, and the entertainment was minimal. Read my review of the Bahia Del Sol hotel for more details.
Globales Santa Ponsa Park – Lovely hotel, good entertainment and good food. Benefits from using the neighbouring hotel facilities.
Globales Playa Santa Ponsa – Very dated and small rooms, cheaper than Santa Ponsa Park due to this, but really feels like you are staying in the past!
Plazamar Serenity Resort – We loved this hotel. The rooms were good, the location was good, and the pool was good, but there were a few downsides too. See my Plazamar Serenity review for more about what we thought.
My Honest Thoughts After Visiting Santa Ponsa Several Times
I’ve travelled to quite a few places over the years, and every destination has something different to offer.
Some are spectacular but exhausting. Some are beautiful but so quiet that after a few days, you’re wondering what to do next. Others are packed with attractions but somehow never feel particularly relaxing.
For me, Santa Ponsa has always managed to find a balance between all of those things.
Every time we’ve visited, we’ve slipped into holiday mode almost immediately. Maybe it’s because everything is within easy reach, or perhaps it’s the atmosphere along the promenade in the evenings. Whatever the reason, it never feels like hard work to have a good holiday there.
I also think it’s a resort that’s grown with us.
When our son was younger, it gave us safe beaches, plenty of family-friendly restaurants and an easy place to spend time together. As he’s grown up, we’ve naturally spent less time building sandcastles and more time exploring coastal walks, discovering new places to eat and taking day trips around Mallorca.
Santa Ponsa has suited every stage. That isn’t something every destination can claim.
Would I say it’s the most beautiful place in Mallorca? Probably not. Would I say it has the best beaches on the island? There are certainly others that are more dramatic.
But would I happily book another holiday there? Without hesitation.
Sometimes the best holiday destinations aren’t the ones with the biggest attractions or the most famous landmarks. They’re the places where you genuinely feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. For me, Santa Ponsa is one of those places.
If you’re looking for a resort where you can relax, enjoy good food, spend your evenings wandering by the sea and use it as a base to discover more of Mallorca, I honestly think it’s hard to beat.
And if you’re anything like us, don’t be surprised if one visit turns into two… and then somehow becomes a place you keep coming back to.
