How to make Healthy Chips in the air fryer
Whether you follow a diet or not you will love these homemade healthy chips. They are much healthier than the chip shop and full of flavour. So how do I make my perfect chips? It really is so simple.

They look good, don’t they? I can assure you they taste good too! So, what is my secret to chips full of flavour, that are crispy and nicely browned? It would be rude to keep my tips to myself. As you know, I always like to share so here you go.
The best homemade healthy chips ever
I use a Tefal Actifry because I love the way it has a paddle that keeps the chips moving as they cook. If you have another brand that doesn’t do that then be sure to keep tossing them in the pan to allow them to cook evenly. Cooking time may also vary with other air fryers.
The best potatoes I have found for chips are jacket potatoes but really I don’t think it matters too much. You can use Maris piper potatoes if you’d prefer. We like to use Sunflower Oil Frylight but again I don’t think it matters if you use a different flavour or variety.

I have tried many different flavourings whilst cooking chips both syn free and slightly synned options and whilst many are tasty I haven’t found anything as good as these.
Alternative flavours for air fryer chips
With a few simple ingredients, you can transform your air fryer chips into a flavour explosion.
Spices are what take your chips from bland to grand. Not only do they add taste, but using the right mix can make your homemade chips a healthy snack as well as an accompaniment to any meal.
When you’re making chips in an air fryer, it’s important to remember that the lack of oil can sometimes mean a lack of flavour. That’s where spices come in! They can easily enhance the natural taste of potatoes or sweet potatoes.
Classic Salt and Pepper Combo
Let’s start with the classics. Salt and pepper are the foundational spices for chips. They might be simple, but they make a big impact. Salt brings out the natural flavours of the potato, while pepper adds a hint of spice that keeps things interesting.
Using freshly ground black pepper can make a huge difference, giving your chips a bold, robust flavour. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, try using sea salt or pink Himalayan salt for a slight twist. These salts offer additional minerals and a unique taste that’s worth exploring.
Remember, when using salt and pepper, a little goes a long way. You want to enhance the flavour, not overpower it. Toss your potato slices in the salt and pepper mix before placing them in the air fryer for the best results.
Garlic and Herb air fryer chips
Dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, and oregano work wonders with air fryer chips. They infuse the chips with a delicate fragrance and taste that makes each crunch more satisfying. Garlic powder is a great option for a subtle, even flavour throughout.
For a more intense garlic flavour, consider using fresh garlic. Just mince it finely and mix it with a small amount of oil before tossing it with your chips.
Spicy Paprika chips in the air fryer
Are you a fan of a little heat? Then paprika is your go-to spice for air fryer chips. Paprika adds a spicy kick.
There are different types of paprika to choose from, including sweet, smoked, and hot. Sweet paprika offers a mild, sweet flavour, while smoked paprika gives your chips a rich, smoky taste. Hot paprika brings the heat, so use it if you like your chips with a bit of fire.
To get the most out of paprika, mix it with a touch of olive oil before coating your potato slices. This helps the spice stick to the chips.
Lemon and Dill air fryer chips
If you’re looking for something refreshing and light, consider the zesty combination of lemon and dill. This pairing is perfect for summer days when you want your chips to be tangy and fresh.
Lemon zest offers a bright citrusy flavour that cuts through the richness of the potato. Combine it with dill, and you’ve got a match made in heaven. Dill adds a herby note that complements the lemon perfectly.
To prepare your chips with this spice mix, simply zest a lemon and mix it with dried dill. You can also add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavours even more. Toss your chips in the mixture, and you’re ready to cook!
Curry chips in the air fryer
Curry powder is a blend of spices that can include turmeric, cumin, coriander, and more. It’s perfect for curry chips without having to mix the spices yourself.
Curry powder adds depth and warmth to your chips, making them stand out with every bite. You can adjust the level of spice to suit your preference, making it as mild or as fiery as you like.
When using curry powder, pair it with a touch of oil to help distribute the spice evenly.
Cheesy Parmesan air fryer chips
Who doesn’t love a little cheese on their chips? Parmesan cheese is a fantastic addition that adds a savoury, umami flavour to your air fryer chips. It’s a simple ingredient that makes the absolutely best cheese chips.
Grated Parmesan works best for coating your chips. The cheese melts slightly in the air fryer, creating a crispy, cheesy crust. For an extra cheesy flavour, consider mixing in some nutritional yeast – it’s a secret ingredient often used by vegans that adds a cheesy taste without the calories.
To make Parmesan chips, sprinkle the grated cheese over your seasoned potato slices before air frying.
Sweet potato and Cinnamon air fryer chips
Let’s switch gears and explore a sweeter side of air fryer chips. Sweet potato chips with cinnamon and a touch of brown sugar are the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth without resorting to unhealthy snacks.
Cinnamon adds a warm, comforting flavour that pairs beautifully with the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes. A sprinkle of brown sugar enhances this sweetness, making each chip a tasty treat.
To make sweet and cinnamon chips, simply mix cinnamon and brown sugar together. Toss your sweet potato slices in this mixture, and air fry until crisp. These chips make a yummy dessert or a sweet treat.
Oniony chips in the air fryer
Another spice that’s worth adding to your air fryer chips is onion powder. It’s a savoury seasoning that adds a subtle, sweet onion flavour without overpowering the other ingredients.
Onion powder is versatile and pairs well with a variety of other spices. You can mix it with garlic powder, paprika, or even rosemary for a unique flavour.
To make onion-flavoured chips, mix the onion powder with your choice of spices and toss your potato slices in the mixture before air frying.
Mediterranean Herb Air Fryer chips
Combining oregano, thyme, and basil, this seasoning brings a taste of the Mediterranean to your homemade chips.
These herbs add an aromatic and slightly sweet flavour that pairs well with the natural taste of potatoes. It’s a refreshing change from the usual spice combinations and is perfect for those who love a hint of the Mediterranean in their meals.
To make Mediterranean herb chips, mix the dried herbs with a touch of olive oil and toss your potato slices in the blend. Air fry until crispy.

Loved these – left the skins on too. So crispy and delicious 🙂
