A Quiet Beauty

Cape Verde rarely shouts for attention, but those who go quickly realise it doesn’t need to. These islands offer a mix of beaches, volcanic landscapes, and is influenced by African, Portuguese and Brazilian cultures. Its natural beauty ranges from golden dunes to green mountainsides. Plus, the local music, Creole cooking, and vibrant markets make this destination feel both exotic and comfortably familiar.

Why Cape Verde?

If you’re after a break from the everyday, Cape Verde holidays tick all the right boxes. You’ll find year-round sunshine, with temperatures often hovering around 25°C, even in winter.

There’s no loud party scene or overcrowded coastline here. Instead, you can hear the sea, stroll empty stretches of sand and enjoy a drink without queuing for half an hour.

For the more adventurous travellers, Cape Verde offers a variety of hiking trails that wind through volcanic terrain. Diving sites show off the colourful reefs and shipwrecks, and Fogo’s volcano tempts those who fancy the challenge of trekking to its summit.

Choosing the Right Island

With 10 islands (nine inhabited), you’re not short of choice. Each one brings a different character, whether it’s quiet and remote or lively and packed with activity.

Sal is the go-to choice if you’re travelling with children or want everything close by. It’s the most developed for tourism, so you’ll have easy access to excursions, restaurants, and beach clubs. Its long sandy beaches and relaxed vibe make it a great all-rounder.

Santiago, is the largest island and rich in history. You can visit the old capital, Cidade Velha – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – explore bustling markets in Praia, or discover traditional Cape Verdean music and food.

Prefer somewhere off the beaten path? Brava is a peaceful, almost untouched island, full of natural charm. Various hiking trails and dramatic valleys give you the chance to fully disconnect and enjoy nature.

What to Pack

You’ll want to dress for the heat. Cape Verde stays warm throughout the year, so choose lightweight, breathable clothes. Linen, cotton and moisture-wicking fabrics are your friends here.

Sandals are fine for the towns, but if you plan to hike or explore rural paths, trainers or walking shoes are a smart addition. Don’t forget to pack some strong sun protection, plus a wide-brimmed hat and a good pair of sunglasses.

Tips & Tricks

Here are some key points to be aware of:

  • The Cape Verdean Escudo is the official currency, but you can’t buy it in the UK. Bring euros instead as they’re widely accepted in hotels and tourist areas. If you need escudos for local markets or transport, exchange euros when you arrive at the airport or at a local bank.
  • The local languages are Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole. While some hotel staff speak English, most locals don’t, especially outside of tourist hubs. A few key Portuguese phrases can go a long way.
  • Expect a lot of sunshine, even in the so-called rainy season from mid-August to mid-October. The showers pass quickly, often leaving behind fresher air and a rainbow if you’re lucky!

Cape Verde is a place that invites you to slow down. Let the island rhythm guide your days, and you’ll soon forget what time it is, making this the ultimate escape.
