Low-fat Baked custard with cardamom and orange recipe

I don’t know about everyone else, but my sweet tooth definitely is to blame for my lack of weight loss. I love all things chocolate, sweet, sugary. Luckily, this low-fat baked custard recipe requiring very few ingredients hits the spot when I’m craving sweetness.

Egg custard with different flavours

If you are a fan of a traditional egg custard, then this low-fat baked custard is similar to that but with a subtle orange and cardamon twist as well as none of the fatty pastry.

This gorgeous dessert is perfect for a dinner party or a special meal for date night. It looks and tastes rather decadent, seeming to have required lots of preparation time. However, while the taste is sublime, the time it takes is very little, giving you more time to soak in the bath or pop open a bottle of bubbly to celebrate whatever the occasion may be.

Of course, given its simplicity, you could also enjoy this baked custard as a midweek dessert.

Enjoying these baked custards on diets

If you are following Slimming World, this Slimming World baked custard recipe is low in syns. If you choose to use the skimmed milk from your healthy extra, then it can even be syn free. The whole recipe uses 3 syns of milk if you wish to count it.

Each portion amounts to 50ml of skimmed milk which is just over half a syn, or take it from your 350ml skimmed milk allowance for healthy extra a choice.

While it does contain sweetener, the amount per portion is almost negligible and doesn’t equate to a syn (just don’t have a second portion, otherwise you will need to count your syns!). One tbsp of sweetener is half a syn so even if you do count it, the syns won’t break the bank!

If you follow Weight Watchers (WW), Noom or any other weight loss plan you can usually count the ingredients within this recipe in your allowances. It is of course important to check yourself any plan you follow and remember all nutritional information and ingredients are found in the recipe card below.

Description

An easy egg custard dessert that all the family will love, perfect for Low-fat diets

Ingredients

Scale

low-calorie cooking spray

4 cardamom pods

2 eggs, beaten

2 tbsp granulated sweetener

200ml Skimmed milk

2 Oranges

Instructions

Preheat oven to 160°c or Gas 3.

Lightly coat 4 large ramekins with low-calorie cooking spray.

Warm the milk with the cardamom pods in a pan but do not let it boil, it just needs to be hand hot.

Remove from the heat and whisk in the beaten eggs and sweetener.

Strain through a sieve to remove any unbeaten bits of egg and the cardamom pods and pour into the ramekins.

Using a deep roasting dish or tin place the ramekins inside and fill the tin with hot water so the water comes halfway up the sides of the pots.

Bake for 40 minutes until they are just set, they will still have a bit of a wobble but this is ok.

Remove from the oven and cool at room temperature then chill.

Carefully segment the oranges removing the skin from the flesh and serve the custards with these segments on top.
