This is a collaborative post.

Did you know that 24th July is National Tequila Day? Do you celebrate the day, or like me, did you even know it existed?

If you feel like celebrating, you could throw a party or even drink with your friends.

Fun Tequila Facts

To get you in the mood for National Tequila Day, here are some fun facts about Tequila that you may or may not know.

Did you know that:

Tequila originated in Mexico. It is named after the town of Tequila, located in the state of Jalisco.

Tequila is protected by a designation of origin, meaning it can only be produced in certain regions of Mexico, primarily Jalisco, and limited areas in Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant, specifically the Weber blue agave. The heart of the plant, known as the piña, is harvested and used to produce tequila.

It takes the blue agave plant around 8 to 12 years to reach maturity before it can be harvested for tequila production. The slow growth contributes to the unique flavours and qualities of tequila.

There are several types of tequila, including Blanco (silver), reposado (rested), añejo (aged), and extra añejo (extra aged). These categories indicate the ageing process and can affect the flavour of the tequila.

Contrary to popular belief, traditional high-quality tequilas do not contain a worm in the bottle. The worm is sometimes found in bottles of mezcal, but it is not common.

While tequila and mezcal are made from agave, they have distinct differences. Tequila can only be made from the blue agave plant, while mezcal can be made from different types of agave. Additionally, tequila is produced in specific regions, while mezcal production is more widespread throughout Mexico.

Tequila is considered Mexico’s national drink and is deeply ingrained in the country’s cultural and historical heritage.

Often when you think of tequila, you think of tequila slammers. That is how tequila is often drunk when you buy cheap nasty tequila. This is very different.

Tequilas such as KAH Tequila and Rooster Rojo Tequila are beautifully crafted tequilas made from 100% blue weber agave in Tequila, Mexico, and are designed for sipping, NOT slamming.

Cocktails you can make with Tequila

Tequila is often consumed neat, accompanied by a slice of lime and a sprinkle of salt. If you don’t like it neat, maybe you would prefer Tequila in a cocktail instead.

Margarita – is believed to have originated in the 1930s or 1940s and is one of the most popular cocktails made with tequila. It is usually made up of tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur, served in a salt-rimmed glass.

Tequila Sunrise – Another well-known cocktail, the Tequila Sunrise, features tequila, orange juice, and grenadine. It gained popularity in the 1970s and is known for its visually appealing layered colours resembling a sunrise.
