How to make the most of Slimming World free foods
Free Foods are key in Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan. They’re the reason you can eat until you’re satisfied and still lose weight. Sounds too good to be true? It’s not, and here’s how to get the best results from them. Personally, I think you still need to be mindful of portion sizes and don’t overeat, but just eat until you are full.
Understanding Slimming World Free Foods properly means you can fill your plate without guilt, save your Swips for treats, and still watch the numbers on the scales go down. Here are some tips to use them well and get variety in your diet while you still lose weight. All opinions are based on my personal experience. I am not trained or employed by Slimming World.

What Are Free Foods?
Free Foods are foods you can eat without weighing, measuring or counting. According to Slimming World’s official guidance, they’re chosen because they’re lower in calories for their weight and help fill you up for longer.
The key rule? Cook them without fat or oil, and eat until you feel satisfied.
The Free Food list includes:
- Lean meat and poultry
- Fish and seafood
- Eggs
- Dried pasta, rice and potatoes
- Fruit and vegetables
- Some fat-free dairy products
- Plain Quorn and tofu
That’s right, pasta, potatoes and rice are all Free Foods. Many people are surprised by this, especially if they’ve tried other diets that ban carbs. But these foods are very filling, which is why they work so well for weight loss.
Understanding Speed Foods
Speed Foods are a category within Slimming World Free Foods. They’re super-low in calories and packed with nutrients. Slimming World recommends filling at least a third of your plate with Speed Foods at mealtimes.
Most fruit and vegetables are Speed Foods, but not all. For example:
- Tinned tomatoes are Speed
- Sweetcorn is Free but not Speed
- Babycorn is Speed
- Sweet potatoes are Free but not Speed
If you’re hungry between meals, reach for Speed Foods first. They’ll fill you up with minimal calories and give your weight loss a boost.
Balanced Meals
Just because something is Free doesn’t mean you should eat only that one food all day. The NHS Eatwell Guide recommends variety for good health, and the same applies to Slimming World.
Try to include:
- A generous portion of Speed Foods (aim for a third of your plate)
- A protein source like chicken, fish, eggs or tofu
- Some Free carbs like pasta, rice or potatoes
- Your Healthy Extras for calcium, fibre and healthy fats
This keeps meals interesting and ensures you’re getting all the nutrients you need. Plus, balanced meals are more satisfying, so you’re less likely to raid the biscuit tin an hour later.
Common Mistakes
Even with Free Foods, there are a few things to watch out for.
Not all pasta is Free
Dried pasta cooked in boiling water is Free. But fresh pasta from the chilled section usually contains added oil, which means it has Swips. Check before you buy. Need recipe inspiration? Here are some of my most popular swip-free pasta dishes to try.
Microwave rice often isn’t Free
Most microwave rice pouches contain oil or other ingredients that add Swips. Dried rice you cook yourself is always the safer bet. Some frozen rice is Free, but always check the label.
Cooking method matters
Slimming World Free Foods must be cooked without fat or oil. If you roast your potatoes in oil they’re no longer free. Use cooking spray (counted as your Healthy Fats or Swips) or try air frying instead.
Fill Up on Speed Foods First
When you’re genuinely hungry, Speed Foods should be your first choice. They’re the lowest in calories and highest in nutrients, so they’ll satisfy you without slowing your weight loss.
Keep Speed Foods visible and ready to eat:
- Wash and chop vegetables as soon as you get home from the shop
- Keep a fruit bowl on the counter
- Prep salad ingredients for the week ahead
- Stock up on tinned tomatoes and frozen vegetables
The NHS recommends at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily. Most of these will be Speed Foods on Slimming World, so you’re ticking two boxes at once.
Carbs are OK
One of the biggest myths about weight loss is that you need to avoid carbohydrates. Slimming World proves this wrong.
Potatoes, rice and pasta are all Slimming World Free Foods because they’re filling and relatively low in calories per portion. They provide energy and help you feel satisfied after meals. The key is to cook them without added fat and eat them with plenty of Speed Foods and protein.
A jacket potato topped with baked beans and salad is a perfect Free meal. So is a bowl of pasta with tomato sauce and vegetables. Or a chicken curry with rice and plenty of vegetables. All Slimming World Free Foods, all filling, all delicious.
Use Your Healthy Extras Wisely
Healthy Extras aren’t Slimming World Free Foods, but they work alongside them to create balanced meals. You get choices for calcium, fibre and healthy fats each day.
Using them in Free Food meals can make dishes more satisfying:
- Add cheese (measured as your Healthy Extra) to cheesy pasta bakes
- Use wholemeal bread (Healthy Extra) for toast with scrambled eggs
- Sprinkle nuts or seeds (Healthy Extra) over salads or porridge
This way, you’re creating complete, filling meals without using any Swips.
Cook in Bulk
Slimming World Free Foods are perfect for batch cooking. Make big pots of curry, chilli or soup at the weekend, then freeze portions for busy weeknights.
This saves time and means you always have something Free to eat, even when you’re tired or rushed. You’re less likely to order a takeaway or grab something with Swips if you’ve got a delicious Free meal ready in minutes.
Try making:
- Big batches of bolognese sauce
- Vegetable-packed soups
- Curry bases that you can add different proteins to
- Slow cooker meals that cook while you’re at work
Listen to Your Body
Just because foods are Free doesn’t mean you should eat when you’re not hungry. Part of Slimming World’s approach is learning to recognise genuine hunger and stopping when you’re comfortably satisfied, not stuffed.
Eat slowly and pay attention to how you feel. Give your body time to register that it’s full. This usually takes about 20 minutes, so don’t rush your meals.
If you’re eating Slimming World Free Foods but not losing weight, ask yourself:
- Am I eating when I’m actually hungry, or just because I’m bored?
- Am I stopping when I’m satisfied, or eating until I feel uncomfortable?
- Am I including enough Speed Foods?
- Am I accidentally adding Swips through cooking methods or shop-bought sauces?
Slimming World Free Foods – Frequently Asked Questions
Can I eat Slimming World Free Foods all day long?
Technically, yes, but it’s better to eat when you’re genuinely hungry and stop when you’re satisfied. Eating out of boredom or habit can slow your weight loss, even with Free Foods.
Are all beans Slimming World Free Foods?
Most tinned and dried beans are Free, including baked beans, kidney beans and chickpeas. Baked beans are definitely Free, whatever the brand, as long as they’re in tomato sauce.
What if I’m not losing weight?
Check you’re including enough Speed Foods, measuring your Healthy Extras accurately, and counting all your Syns. Also make sure you’re not adding oil or fat when cooking Free Foods.
Can I freeze Free Food meals?
Absolutely. Most Free Food meals freeze brilliantly. Just make sure to cool them quickly and freeze them within two hours of cooking.
Are grapes Free or Speed?
Grapes are Free but not Speed. Most fruit is Free, but only some varieties count as Speed Foods.
What about shop-bought sauces?
Most have Syns because they contain sugar or oil. Making your own with tinned tomatoes, passata and spices is Free and usually tastier anyway.
