Slimming World Free Foods and Speed Foods: Your Questions Answered
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether grapes are a Speed Food, whether sweetcorn is Free on Slimming World or why baked beans don’t seem to count in quite the same way as other vegetables, you’re definitely not the only one.
Some of the most confusing Slimming World questions aren’t actually about Swips at all. They’re about everyday foods that don’t quite fit where you expect them to.
Fruit and vegetables can be particularly confusing because being a Free Food doesn’t necessarily mean something is a Speed Food. That’s where questions about foods such as grapes, sweetcorn, avocado, baked beans and corn on the cob often come from.
I’ve put together answers to some of the Slimming World food questions I see asked again and again. Slimming World does change its plan from time to time, so always check the current app if you need an official value, but this should help explain why some foods are treated differently.

Are grapes Free on Slimming World?
Grapes can be confusing because people often use the terms Free Food and Speed Food as though they mean the same thing.
They don’t.
Whole fresh grapes are generally treated as a Free Food, but grapes are not a Speed Food. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with eating grapes or that they’re somehow a poor choice. It simply means they don’t fall into Slimming World’s Speed Food category.
This is one of those areas where I think the terminology can make perfectly nutritious foods sound less healthy than they actually are. If you enjoy grapes, there’s no reason to avoid them simply because they aren’t labelled as Speed.
Be aware that changing the form of fruit can change how Slimming World treats it, so dried, juiced, puréed or cooked fruit may not be treated in the same way as whole fresh fruit.
Is sweetcorn Free on Slimming World?
Sweetcorn is another food that causes a surprising amount of confusion.
Sweetcorn is generally a Free Food on Slimming World, but it isn’t a Speed Food.
That applies whether you’re adding sweetcorn to a salad, mixing it through pasta or serving corn on the cob alongside your dinner. You can still include it as part of a meal; it simply doesn’t count towards the Speed Food element in the same way as vegetables such as broccoli, peppers or courgettes.
Tinned sweetcorn can also be Free, but it’s sensible to check what it’s packed in and the current Slimming World information for the particular product you’re using.
Are baked beans Free on Slimming World?
Many standard baked beans are generally classed as Free Foods on Slimming World, which is one reason they’ve long been such a popular quick meal or jacket potato topping.
However, baked beans aren’t generally considered a Speed Food.
Again, Free and Speed are two different things.
Different varieties of baked beans can contain different ingredients, particularly flavoured versions, so I’d always check the exact product in the Slimming World app rather than assuming every tin on the supermarket shelf is treated identically.
Is corn on the cob Free on Slimming World?
Yes, plain corn on the cob is generally treated as a Free Food, but like sweetcorn, it isn’t a Speed Food.
Obviously, what you put on your corn can change things. Butter, spreads, cheese and sauces may need to be counted separately depending on what you’re using.
Is avocado a Speed Food on Slimming World?
No. Avocado isn’t a Speed Food and is treated differently from most fresh fruit and vegetables on the Slimming World plan because of its higher fat and energy content.
That doesn’t make avocado unhealthy.
Avocados provide unsaturated fats, fibre and a range of nutrients, which is a lovely example of why Slimming World’s classifications shouldn’t be confused with a simple list of “healthy” and “unhealthy” foods.

Are tinned tomatoes speed?
Yes, they are, as are tomato puree and passata. I find these great for making my own pasta sauce, pizza topping and even for tomatoes on toast for breakfast. They are great to use in pasta dishes to top up those veggies! Free on Slimming World means you can have as many as you like.
Are sweet potatoes speed?
No, unfortunately not. They are still free however so you can enjoy them guilt-free. Perfect as an alternative to a jacket potato as they have numerous benefits you shouldn’t ignore too.
Is all pasta free?
If you buy it dry and cook it in boiling water then yes it is. If you cook lasagne sheets dry as crisps they are not classed as free. This is because you could overeat them and, well let’s face it, it isn’t really what lasagne sheets are for!
Is Fresh Pasta Free?
Fresh pasta from the fridges at the supermarket is not classed as free food as they usually have added oil.
Which rice is free?
Usually, all dried rice is free, the syns would simply be in what you add to it.
Is microwave rice classed as free?
I am not aware of any microwave rice pouches that are free on Slimming World, but some frozen rice is free.
Is salmon free on Slimming World?
Yes, all fish is free if it is cooked as it is, anything added such as oil may be syns.
Are kidney beans free on Slimming World?
Most beans are free on the plan, including kidney beans, black beans, haricot beans and more.
Which bread can you have?
All bread is counted as syns. Some however can be chosen as healthy extra b choice. The ones you can count are usually wholemeal, seeded or high-fibre bread.
Is white bread free?
Unfortunately, not; some best of both bread can be enjoyed as the healthy extra b choice, though, if you are really not keen on wholemeal.
What’s the difference between Free Foods and Speed Foods?
Free Foods and Speed Foods are two terms that can be surprisingly easy to muddle up when you’re following Slimming World. I think some of the confusion comes from the fact that people often talk about a food being “not Speed” as though that means you shouldn’t eat it, when that isn’t the case at all.
Free Foods are the foods that form the basis of the Slimming World plan and don’t usually need to be weighed, measured or given a Swip value. This includes lots of everyday foods such as lean meat, fish, eggs, potatoes, pasta, rice, beans, fruit and vegetables, although exactly how a food is prepared can make a difference.
Speed Foods are a particular group of Free Foods, mostly fruit and vegetables, that Slimming World encourages you to include generously in your meals. They’re generally foods with a lower energy density that can help you fill your plate while still enjoying a satisfying amount of food.
The important thing to remember is that a Free Food doesn’t have to be a Speed Food.
This explains some of the questions I see again and again. For example, grapes are Free but aren’t Speed Foods. Sweetcorn is Free but isn’t a Speed Food, and baked beans can be Free without being Speed either.
That doesn’t suddenly make grapes, sweetcorn or baked beans “bad” choices. It simply means they sit in a different category within the Slimming World plan.
I think this distinction is particularly useful if you’re trying to make sense of advice about filling a proportion of your plate with Speed Foods. If you make a salad containing lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and sweetcorn, for example, the sweetcorn doesn’t become something you need to avoid just because it isn’t Speed. You would simply count the other Speed vegetables towards that part of your meal.
It’s also worth remembering that Slimming World’s categories aren’t the same thing as nutritional rankings. A food not being Speed doesn’t mean it isn’t nutritious, just as something being Free doesn’t necessarily mean you should eat unlimited quantities regardless of your hunger.
Slimming World does occasionally change its classifications and rules, so if you’re currently a member, I’d always use the latest information in the app for individual foods. But if you’re wondering why someone has told you that grapes or sweetcorn are “not Speed”, that’s the important distinction: they can still be Free Foods; they’re simply not part of the Speed Food category.
