Do you love a Slimming World breakfast but wish they made Slimming World hash browns? This recipe may help!

I love a cooked breakfast, not just at breakfast but for any meal! When you are being healthy though it just isn’t the same without hash browns, is it?

When I was chatting to a fellow blogger, Jenna, we realised her recipe for air fryer hash browns is actually great for weight loss too.

About Jenna

Jenna blogs at A Balanced Belly about having Crohn’s disease and following a free-from diet to help reduce symptoms.

Also as a mum, she realises that no one has time for fancy ingredients and wants to make healthy meals for all the family so this is perfect.

Adaptions to these air fryer hash browns

If you love these but want to change them a little you could try making them with sweet potato instead of white potatoes. This would work just as well and be perfect as a side to most meals too.

If you are trying to reduce carbs you could try to make these with butternut squash too.

I have not tried them like this yet but they would be so tasty. The only difficulty is they may not hold together as well because butternut squash is not as starchy as potato.

Tips to make these perfectly

To ensure these hash browns cook perfectly one thing you need to be really sure of is that you remove as much liquid as possible from the potatoes.

If you use a clean tea towel and really squeeze the potatoes out well you will have the best hash browns possible. If you find they are a little soft, then try to squeeze a little more water out next time!

Whilst a microwave is amazing and can do many things, I wouldn’t recommend using it to reheat these hash browns as they will lose their crispiness.

Air fryer hash browns for weight loss

Whilst this recipe includes a little oil it is still much healthier and better on most weight loss plans than shop-bought hash browns.

If you would like to reduce the calories or fat in these air fryer hash browns you could omit the oil. This would significantly change the taste though.

I think that actually though, the extra calories in this recipe make them very worth it.

spoonful of oil being poured

Approximate syns in these hash browns

The whole recipe includes only oil as syns with 1 tbsp of olive/vegetable oil being 6 syns (approx).

So, if making 3 hash browns according to the recipe, they would work out as 2 syns each (approx).

Shop-bought hash browns are also around 2 syns each but I think these are better and so easy to make.

A big improvement on McDonald’s hash browns at around 4.5 syns each!

Description

Tasty air fryer hash browns are great for weight loss. They’re full of flavour and can accompany any meal

Ingredients

Scale

2 Potatoes (russet work well)

1 tbsp Olive oil (or vegetable oil)

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Peel your potatoes if preferred (skin-on potatoes are fine too)

Using a cheese grater carefully grate your potatoes (not your fingers!)

Place all the grated potatoes into a clean tea towel and use to squeeze all the moisture from the grated potatoes. Try and squeeze as much as possible as this will affect the taste of the final hash browns.

Using a mixing bowl add the grated potato, oil, salt and pepper. I recommend quite a decent amount of salt and pepper but the choice is yours. Mix well.

Add the potato to your air fryer formed into patties if you can. If not, don’t worry it will still be tasty!

Cook at 190°C/370°F for 3.5 minutes before shaking or turning over the hash browns, then cook for a further 3.5 minutes.

Serve with whatever you fancy!
