The benefits of Bellydancing for fitness
I had never considered belly dancing for fitness or to improve mental health, so when I realised from my friend Sophie that it is possible, I was keen for her to share this with you.

What is belly dancing?
Belly dancing, often referred to as the “dance of the East,” is a mesmerising and ancient form of dance that celebrates the beauty and strength of the human body. Originating in the Middle East, it’s characterised by its fluid, undulating movements primarily focused on the torso. Contrary to popular belief, belly dancing is more than just a series of hip shakes and shimmying; it’s an art form that demands skill, control, and a deep connection with one’s own body.
Performed solo or in groups, this dance includes a variety of styles and interpretations, each with its own unique flair and cultural significance. Dancers often wear elaborate costumes that accentuate their movements, complete with jingling coin belts that provide a built-in drum section.
Belly dancing not only provides a fantastic workout, think of it as Pilates with a hint of mystery, but also offers a path to self-expression and confidence. Whether you’re twirling in a studio or practising moves in your living room, the joy and empowerment this dance offers are universal. After all, who could resist the allure of a dance that makes you feel like Cleopatra herself? Just remember, every shimmy and shake is a step closer to unlocking your inner goddess.
Benefits of Belly dancing
Belly dancing boosts your mood, core, confidence and contributes to your total fitness.
We often steer away from gentle exercising that’s low resistance and ‘slower,’ but whilst I may perform acrobatic sets during a Bellydance performance, the core of this art form and dance derives from enjoying your body as it moves.
A good shimmy and belly dance class not only burns calories but also helps to strengthen your core, which improves your posture, and it provides a full workout for your mind and body.
How Belly Dancing can help you
Belly dancing is based on small but isolated movements, as well as holding a ‘core posture,’ which means you engage and use a range of muscles that are often neglected.
The isolating moves of this dance form, from the percussive hip drops to the undulations of a belly roll and your posture as you perfect your snake arms movement, all contribute to a power-packed full-body ‘exercise class.’
The results are much more transformational than physically a “stronger leaner body,” however. You’ll improve your confidence, become part of a community, and learn the art of breathwork as well as work in the ‘flow’ with your body rather than against it.
