Here I bring you the best home workout equipment bargain buys I’ve found especially for those of you aiming to get fit on a budget.

Isn’t it funny how for so many people getting fit is an expensive endeavour? Like the fact that it is often cheaper to buy processed foods than healthy proteins, fruits and vegetables. Joining a gym is often a costly affair, but you can go it alone if you really want to.

A table with a phone, small dumbbells and a skipping rope and a drinks bottle.

Exercise Mat

An exercise mat of some sort is essential to home workout equipment if you are going to be doing any floor work, for example, sit-ups, leg lifts and planks.

Personally, I invested in a decent thickness one to ensure that I didn’t feel all the lumps and bumps in the ground beneath me (I like to work out in the great outdoors whenever possible to soak up that Vitamin D!). However, you could use interlocking floor tiles instead if you prefer.

So, while this may not exactly be a bargain, it’s certainly worth spending a little extra for a quality exercise mat that will last longer. If you are intending on any kind of workout this is one of the best home workout equipment purchases you can make!

Weighted hoop

A weighted hoop is a wonderful piece of home workout kit, but it doesn’t half hurt, to begin with, bruises and all!

They are reasonably priced, and because the rings are detachable, it is suitable for all – you just reduce or increase the size according to who’s using them.

Stick your favourite song on Spotify or Amazon Music, blast it out of your phone and hula hoop. Just a few minutes each day can really help to boost your abs and waistline.

Skipping rope

We all remember that scene from Rocky where Sylvester Stallone is skipping, right? Well, it is not just for boxers.

Skipping increases your heart rate (quickly!) as well as helps your hand-eye coordination. What a great way to add inexpensive home workout equipment to your daily routine.

I like a skipping rope with foam handles so it doesn’t dig into my palms. When it arrived, I panicked that it was too long, but I found out that it was easily adjustable and now it’s the perfect length.

Apparently, ten minutes of skipping is as good for you as 30 minutes of jogging. Check my exercise calorie calculator! I struggle to do a couple of minutes right now, but I aim high!

Walking boots

How many times has someone told you that walking is a free form of exercise? Well, yes, but you really should ensure you wear decent footwear to prevent blisters.

Regatta walking shoes are fantastic. Although you will need to break them in, over a couple of weeks or so, they are worth the time and effort of doing so.

Weight and strength training equipment

While cardio makes for a great workout, incorporating some strength training into your exercise routine is essential for all-around fitness and improved muscle tone.

Here are a few of the best home workout equipment bargains that ought to help:

Dumbbells

Dumbbells are a staple piece of equipment for many fitness fanatics due to their versatility. They can be used in a variety of ways to help strengthen arms, chests, backs and abs.

Typically, people start with low weights and as their strength increases, so do the weights and number of reps or sets. For obvious reasons, this can be an expensive way of doing things.

Water-filled dumbbells might be the solution for you. You can add as much or little water to them as you like, allowing you to increase the weight as slowly as you like.

Kettlebells

I remember these suddenly breaking into the fitness scene. Every man and his dog seemed to be either holding or attending a kettlebell class.

After plucking up the courage to buy my own set, I definitely can see the attraction.

In fact, I use mine far more than I do the dumbbells, so I’d recommend just buying one or the other. Unless you are injured, I would suggest getting nothing lighter than 4kg.

For me, a 6kg is perfect, but for some single-hand exercises, a 4kg allows me to do a greater number of reps and sets.

This kettlebell workout should help you if you are a beginner.

Resistance bands

Resistance bands are another bit of an invaluable and versatile kit for fitness fanatics (wannabe or otherwise).

A set containing five different bands is ideal, perfect for beginners to advanced and everyone in between, including those struck down with injuries.

You can utilise them to increase the benefits of exercises, such as squats, lunges, calf raises, leg lifts, high knees and many more.

The fantastic thing about them is they cost so little, but you can improve the strength in your arms, legs, glutes, abs and back/shoulders.

One of the best home exercise equipment suggestions I can give for a budget as this set of five is usually well under a tenner!

So, here are some of my favourite bargain buys for the best home workout equipment in my opinion. I hope that you will benefit from them as much as I have.

Remember, always consult a professional prior to making significant changes to your fitness regime if you have certain ailments or have had injuries in the past.
